Find out more about Churches Mutual and the history behind the credit union
Churches Mutual is a mutual society, a savings and loans co-operative owned and controlled by its members.
It is an ecumenical collaboration between the Church in Wales, the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, the Methodist Church of Great Britain, the United Reformed Church, the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, and the Scottish Episcopal Church.
All credit union members should share a common bond. For Churches Mutual that means they are lay or ordained ministers, or employees or trustees associated with one of our partner churches. This includes local, regional and national church institutions, denominational charities, voluntary aided schools and diocesan academy trusts.
Churches Mutual is run by a small but professional staff and governed by a volunteer board, which includes accountants, clergy, former regulators and experienced businessmen and women drawn from the participating denominations.
Churches Mutual Timeline

Churches Mutual is a financial co-operative run by a volunteer board of directors, and supported in an advisory capacity by non-executive members. The day to day management of the Credit Union is handled by the staff team.
We believe that it is God’s will that everyone should be able to enjoy “life in all its fullness” (John 10.10). This implies the opportunity for you to participate fully in your community, regardless of your level of wealth or financial skills.
Churches Mutual is owned and run by its members. Part of this process is the Annual General Meeting which takes place usually in January, where the members receive reports of the activity of the credit union, approve the accounts and proposed dividend, and elect the volunteer board of directors.
We like to keep our members informed of Churches Mutual’s activity during the year, not just at the AGM so in this section you will find announcements regarding products and services. We also from time to time include blog posts and articles that may be of interest and promote financial wellbeing.
Churches Mutual’s members come from all walks of life, not only in ordained or lay ministry but church workers, employees of local, regional and natation church bodies, church VA schools and Multi-Academy Trusts, and employees and trustees of charities under the umbrella of our denominational church partners.
